Oman Calls for Restraint and Dialogue to Resolve the Middle East War

Al-Taj News – Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi called on Saturday at the United Nations for all parties involved in the Middle East war to “exercise restraint,” while affirming Muscat’s readiness to play a mediating role.

This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump rejected earlier on Saturday a ceasefire proposal put forward by Iran, which Tehran said would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic within a week.

The Strait of Hormuz is vital to global energy supplies and has become a focal point of the dispute between the United States and Iran, about seven months after the war began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on the Islamic Republic.

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Al-Busaidi said, “We call on all concerned parties to resolve their outstanding differences by pursuing a policy of restraint, foresight, and engaging in dialogue, in order to reach consensual political solutions and sustainable understandings in the interests of all.”

He added that “the Sultanate of Oman reaffirms its steadfast commitment to continuing its efforts aimed at safeguarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz… and calls on all parties to cooperate with it in these efforts.”

The Sultanate of Oman lies opposite Iran across the Strait of Hormuz, and ships seeking to avoid restrictions imposed by Tehran have recently begun taking a route along the Omani coast, with several of them coming under attack.
